Insight Research PDX is a woman-owned, Portland-based consulting partnership. Our team has worked together for a decade, and has wide-ranging experience in research, education, facilitation, and the non-profit sector.

Maryann Bylander is a trained sociologist, and received her PhD from University of Texas at Austin in 2012.  She is a mixed-methods researcher, with experience developing and fielding surveys, conducting participatory research, and doing intensive ethnographic observation and interviews. In addition, she has a long history of research consulting, including projects with the UN’s International Organization for Migration, the World Bank’s KNOMAD project, Save the Children’s Better Care Network, and others.  Prior to her academic career, Maryann worked in the global development sector in Southeast Asia, where she managed a non-profit working in the education sector. Through this work she has experience conducting participatory rural appraisals, stakeholder analyses, and impact evaluation for non-profits and social businesses. She is particularly interested in questions of economic justice, early education, immigration, and economic development. Maryann moved to the Pacific Northwest ten years ago, and loves hiking, climbing, and seeing live music with her husband and daughter.

Sarah Warren is an expert on racial equity, housing and research methods. Her research trajectory started in Argentina with questions about indigenous sovereignty in the face of policies that attempted to make indigenous people invisible. She has been intrigued with the impact of policy and the mechanisms of social change ever since then. More recently, Sarah’s research has pivoted to look at housing policy, particularly the intersection between the short-term rental market and affordable housing. Sarah holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Spanish from the University of Arizona, a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In her free time Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband and kids in the tall trees of Oregon, reading and cooking. She can often be found at youth sporting and musical events cheering on her kids.
